Purchased with funding Wilkos received through a Pets in the Classroom grant, the class pet is helping students explore amphibians, habitats, animal behavior and the needs of living things.
Observing and caring for Hehnly gives students opportunities to practice responsibility while developing curiosity about the natural world. The experience also reinforces an important lesson: living things need attention, care and respect.
“Hehnly has become a special part of the classroom community, bringing excitement and a sense of wonder to the first grade students,” Wilkos said.
